Man of the Match: Dan Newberry “D3”
One word: WOW!! A total turn around from the previous week. Aggression is the word that the 2nd XV needed to adopt, and they took that on right at the whistle. Having worked on the simple things in the contact area and the breakdown and trying to keep things simple during the week, lead to an explosive outburst of “go forward, can do” mentality. Leadership demonstrated by Scott Cole, Steve Pitelli and new comer Gerard Doherty directed the passages of play. But high praise goes to Dan Newberry, captain, leading by example – the “mad dogs and Englishman” style of play, refusing to take a step backward. The heavy men kept pace by working around the corner to provide options on attack while ensuring ball retention when the heavy work needed to begin.
The 2nd XV needed some key figures to galvanize this young team. They all know what to do, but the key is figuring out “when” to do it. The bench contributed to the scoring by personalizing their performances with dotting over the chalk on numerous occasions.
The contact area and the breakdown were much improved, and the forwards played well in front of Liam who started at 9 this week. The objective from the outset was to provide a road map in developing a cohesive unit and to bring a bit of fun back into the 2nd XV. The Scottish 2nd XV have been quite successful over the past 6 years – and with a turnover of 50-60% of the players, we needed to re-establish that…. and the team needs to re-enforce it week in and week out to build the confidence.
An excellent game against Oshawa for the 2nd XV. Looking forward to the Nomads game next week – looking to improve as always.
